NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — What began as a morning breakfast at a Wendy’s in Northridge quickly turned into a frightening melee Wednesday when a verbal dispute escalated into a man brandishing a large knife and another customer hurling chairs across the dining room in self-defense, all captured on video that has since circulated widely.
According to police and witness accounts reported by KTLA and TMZ, the confrontation started inside the restaurant when a man wearing a gray baseball cap and black polo shirt, who had been arguing with employees near the counter, approached a couple seated and eating. The seated man, dressed in a black Nirvana sweatshirt and plaid pants, stood up from his table and pulled a substantial knife from the back of his waistband as the two got face-to-face.
Video from RMG News shows the men trading heated words. The man in the cap can be heard challenging the other, repeatedly asking variations of “You gonna stab me?” while the knife-wielding man responds with threats, including “I’ll f***ing kill you, dog.” As the situation intensified, the man in the cap began picking up and throwing chairs toward the armed individual in an apparent effort to keep distance and defend himself. Chairs scattered across the dining area as bystanders reacted and the two men eventually moved outside into the parking lot, continuing to exchange words.
Witness Jesus Lepit told local reporters that the man in the baseball hat appeared to initiate the confrontation. “The customer was still talking to the employees, arguing with them… And then that’s when he decided to come up to the couple that was minding their own business, eating their breakfast. And he got into the guy that was eating his breakfast; he got into that guy’s face,” Lepit said.
Los Angeles police responded to the scene and detained the man who pulled the knife. Footage shows him handcuffed in the parking lot as officers speak with both parties. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether charges will be filed in connection with the incident. No injuries were immediately reported from the altercation.
The dramatic video has drawn significant attention online, highlighting concerns about public safety in everyday settings. Wendy’s has not issued a public statement as of Wednesday evening. Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the confrontation.
