A $2 million Learjet 60 private jet slammed into a mobile home park in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, carving out a massive crater and erupting in a raging fireball that sent thick black smoke pouring into the sky.
Shocking video from the scene captures the pure horror: intense orange flames consuming twisted wreckage, downed power lines sparking amid the debris, and stunned residents and bystanders filming the chaos as emergency lights flash in the background. The jet clipped a tree on the way down and demolished at least one modular home in the impact.
The aircraft, identified as Bombardier Learjet 60 registration N722BD (serial 60-271), had departed Austin, Texas. Flight tracking showed it last at 37,000 feet before a right turn and an extreme descent rate of roughly 32,640 feet per minute, a near-vertical plunge that left the enormous crater visible in aftermath footage.
The crash hit shortly after 1 p.m. near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North. Witnesses described a boom so loud it sounded like a missile, followed by a towering black smoke cloud. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue initially flagged it as a mass casualty incident, with area hospitals placed on alert. Authorities have reported multiple fatalities, though the precise number of people aboard the jet (which can seat up to 10) and any victims on the ground have not been confirmed. Early reports indicated no one was immediately transported to hospitals.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Rescue confirmed an aircraft incident and closed Military Trail in both directions between Cresthaven and 10th Avenue North, warning of an extended investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to lead the probe into what caused the high-speed dive.
Greenacres, a community of modular and mobile homes just outside Palm Springs, is left reeling as emergency crews work the scene and the full extent of the tragedy continues to emerge.
