Halloween Horror In Oak Park Area Of Chicago: Hundreds Of Teens Swarm Streets For Wild ‘Purge’ Takeover As Fight, Climb On Cars And Twerk, Woman In Costume Is Gunned Down With 29 Shots
A chilling Halloween night in the leafy Chicago suburb of Oak Park turned into a scene straight out of a horror movie Saturday, as hundreds of teenagers flooded the streets for a chaotic “Purge” takeover, complete with fights, kids climbing on cars, and women twerking atop parked vehicles, before the night ended in deadly gunfire.
Viral cellphone video that exploded online shows massive crowds packing the sidewalks and intersections under streetlights, with the overlay text “POV: you went to the purge night in oak park” and a later caption declaring “oak park was where it was at.” Footage captures young people in costumes and street clothes milling about, some dancing on cars as the scene grows more frenzied into the night.
The gathering was no surprise to local authorities. Oak Park police, still dealing with the fallout from last year’s Halloween teen takeover that drew an estimated 500 youths, fights inside businesses, and reports of gunshots, had ramped up staffing and called in mutual aid from neighboring departments. Officials said they were “aware of concerns” about another large gathering and deployed officers from Harlem Avenue toward Austin Boulevard.
Yet despite the heavy police presence that some local reports claimed kept downtown relatively contained with no major arrests or damage, the night took a lethal turn just after midnight.
Around 12:29 a.m. Sunday on the 1100 block of Lyman Avenue — a residential street near the Chicago border — officers responded to a shooting and found a 22-year-old woman in a Halloween costume suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 12:57 a.m.
Ring doorbell video captured the horrific sequence: a man and the woman arguing before he pulled a gun and opened fire. He then unleashed a second barrage as she screamed for help. Investigators recovered approximately 29 shell casings at the scene. Police described the incident as potentially targeted and said both the victim’s and suspect’s identities remained unknown as detectives pursued leads.
The shooting capped what social media users branded “The Purge”, a nod to the dystopian film franchise in which all crime is legal for one night. While police statements emphasized preparation and a managed response in the downtown core, the viral clips and the body count on Lyman Avenue painted a picture of a suburb that once again struggled to keep large groups of teens from turning Halloween into mayhem.
Oak Park officials have not released further details on the shooting suspect or confirmed a direct link between the downtown crowds and the fatal encounter. Anyone with information is urged to contact Oak Park police.
The village, known for its progressive politics and proximity to Chicago’s West Side, has faced growing questions about its ability to handle these recurring teen flash-mob events after last year’s chaos required outside help and pepper-ball deployments.
For residents who watched the videos and woke up to news of a young woman in costume gunned down with nearly three dozen rounds, the message was clear: the purge had come to Oak Park.
