A celebration meant to honor culture, community and family fun descended into chaos Saturday night when a large group of juveniles allegedly attacked police officers during Baltimore's 50th annual AFRAM Festival, forcing authorities to declare part of the park a "civil unrest zone."

The disturbance erupted around 8 p.m. at Baltimore's Druid Hill Park, where thousands had gathered for AFRAM, one of the largest Black cultural festivals on the East Coast and a centerpiece of the city's Juneteenth weekend celebrations. Organizers expected hundreds of thousands of attendees for the free three-day event marking its 50th anniversary.

According to reports, officers responding to a group of unruly juveniles were met with hostility as a large fight broke out. Video circulating on social media appeared to show objects being thrown toward police as officers attempted to regain control of the crowd.

Authorities said multiple officers were assaulted during the melee. The situation escalated to the point that officials declared a civil unrest zone in part of the park while additional resources were deployed to disperse the crowd.

Police also utilized aerial support, including the department's Foxtrot helicopter, as law enforcement worked to clear the area and restore order, according to social media accounts and local reporting.

The violent confrontation wasn't the festival's first brush with law enforcement that day.

Earlier Saturday, police arrested a 17-year-old after allegedly discovering a firearm at the event, raising security concerns hours before the evening disturbance unfolded.

The outbreak of violence cast a shadow over a landmark year for AFRAM, which bills itself as a celebration of African American culture featuring live music, food vendors, family activities, and community events. This year's festival marked its 50th anniversary and featured major musical acts including Mario, Charlie Wilson and The LOX.

Officials have not yet released a full accounting of arrests, injuries or potential charges stemming from the unrest.
