Harrowing CCTV Captures Young Mother’s Fatal Plunge From 8th Floor Hotel Window As Structure Collapses Beneath Her

In the grainy, dimly lit corridor of the Rio Poty Hotel in São Luís, the footage captures what should have been an ordinary late-night moment between a couple. Instead, it records the final seconds of Renata Rebeca Negrão Saldanha dos Santos’s life.

The 26-year-old from Ananindeua in the northern Brazilian state of Pará had been walking the seventh-floor hallway with her boyfriend in the early hours of Tuesday, November 3. The pair, who had arrived in the coastal city on October 28 so he could compete in a poker tournament, were searching for their room key. A blue bag lay on the tiled floor nearby. According to police analysis of the security cameras, she decided to sit on the window’s sill, the low sill. She fell onto a marquee, the canopy covering the hotel entrance below. Rescuers reached her quickly, but she could not be saved.

The boyfriend remained standing near the window for several seconds, appearing frozen. He then crouched to look down. Moments later, a hotel employee in a blue shirt entered the corridor, was told what had happened, and began making calls.

Civil Police investigators, led by Delegate George Marques of the Superintendência de Homicídios e Proteção à Pessoa, reviewed the footage and ruled out any assault or push. “There was no type of aggression, there was no push. He was not even close to her,” Marques stated. “She sat on the sill and leaned her back against an aluminum structure on the hotel window. That aluminum structure gave way, and unfortunately she fell.”

The boyfriend was taken for questioning and released. He is not considered a suspect. In his statement, he said the couple had been drinking that night and that he could not clearly remember the moment of the fall. Police are examining whether alcohol played a role, though the primary hypothesis remains an accidental death caused by structural failure. Forensic experts have examined the window to determine why the aluminum piece detached. Results are still pending. Early reports that the death might have been suicide were discarded after the cameras were reviewed.

Renata and her boyfriend had planned to return home to Pará the same day the tragedy struck. Friends and family have described her as a devoted mother of two young children who worked relentlessly for them, driving for ride, hailing apps, selling sushi, and making other sacrifices. She had hoped to open a marketing agency. A childhood friend, tourism agent Jessé David, told local media he went straight to her mother’s house after hearing the news. “Renata was always someone who fought hard for her children,” he said. “She was never afraid to work for them… They were always her priority.”

The Rio Poty Hotel issued a statement expressing deep sorrow, offering solidarity to the family, and confirming full cooperation with authorities. One of Renata’s sisters was traveling to São Luís, and plans were underway for a wake in Ananindeua.

The footage, which has circulated widely online, has drawn attention not only to the heartbreaking loss of a young mother but also to questions about the hotel’s window structures. Police continue their investigation while the family prepares to bury a woman who had come to the city for a short trip and never made it home.
