Shocking footage shows a heavy excavator tumbling into a canal in India after the century-old bridge it was dismantling suddenly gave way beneath its tracks.

The viral clip, filmed from the structure itself, captures the yellow CAT machine perched on the bridge as it hammers sections of concrete. Within seconds the span cracks and collapses in a cascade of debris, sending the excavator plunging into the murky waters of the Ganga Canal amid enormous splashes.

The incident took place in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, on or around 25–26 September 2022. The roughly 100-year-old bridge was being demolished as part of work to widen the Panipat-Khatima Highway. Officials had already closed the structure to traffic because of its dilapidated condition.

In the footage, the operator can be seen working from the top of the failing bridge, exactly the high-risk setup that safety guidance warns against. As the deck drops, the machine tips forward and partially submerges, its arm still raised and work lights glowing against the grey water and surrounding trees. Onlookers later reported that the driver managed to climb free and wade to safety; police and locals then helped pull him clear. He was not seriously injured.

Local reports described it as a “narrow escape.” The excavator, often referred to in India by the generic name “JCB,” remained partially submerged after the fall. No other casualties were reported.

The video has resurfaced repeatedly online, most recently shared with the caption “Sitting on the bridge while taking the bridge down is peak.” Viewers have pointed to the obvious danger of positioning heavy machinery on a structure being actively dismantled, a practice that has produced similar near-misses in other Indian states, including Gujarat.

The Muzaffarnagar collapse is one of several documented cases in which an excavator has fallen while demolishing an old bridge over a river or canal. In each instance, the operator has so far escaped serious harm, though the images underline how quickly a routine demolition can turn into a high-stakes rescue.
