A 97-year-old California man made the most dramatic exit imaginable at his own birthday bash, collapsing and dying moments after cutting a rug to the Bee Gees disco classic “Stayin’ Alive,” friends said.
Vito, the life of the party whose last name has not been released, was hosting a Halloween-themed “rager” in Los Angeles last week when the night took a sudden, heartbreaking turn. Just after guests sang “Happy Birthday” and the 1977 hit blasted through the speakers, the nonagenarian — who had been clapping, swaying, and smiling in a black button-down shirt and dress pants, suffered a medical emergency and passed away peacefully, surrounded by friends and his favorite music.
“This man lived his life to the fullest, all the way up until his last moments, quite literally,” said 24-year-old baker and TikTok influencer Eden Malinoff, who hosted the party for her much older neighbor and friend. “At 24 years old, I could not keep up with this man; he was the life of the party.”
Malinoff, who runs the Los Angeles cake-and-cookie business Baked (TikTok: @bakedsocal), revealed she asked Vito his secret to reaching 97. His answer? “Never drink cheap liquor.” She responded by baking him a red wine chocolate cake that “sat on top like fine wine.”
Footage from the celebration, which quickly racked up millions of views, shows the white-haired Vito, sporting black-rimmed glasses, grooving hard amid string lights, snacks, and a lively crowd of younger friends. One clip captures him dancing just before the song that would ironically soundtrack his final moments.
“Unfortunately, the night did not end as anticipated, and Vito made a dramatic exit,” Malinoff said in her viral videos. “But if there’s any way he could have chosen to go out, it would have been like this. He was surrounded by people he loved, we were celebrating his long and full life, and I’m just so grateful I got to be a part of it.”
Vito’s best friend, identified online as Caleb Turner, confirmed the details: “He had some medical issues that we didn’t know the severity of, and he passed away peacefully with his favorite music going. RIP to an absolute legend.”
Social media erupted over the poetic timing. Commenters called it “such a Vito way to go out,” with one writing, “Dying at your birthday bash is kinda fire.” Malinoff later clarified the death was unexpected and not related to alcohol or any intentional act, simply a “freak coincidence” for a man who refused to let age slow him down.
As one tribute put it: He lived it up right to the end, and then the music stopped.
