ISIS has claimed responsibility for the New York terror attack which left eight dead and 11 injured.
In the latest edition of the Islamic State weekly newspaper al-Naba, the killer Sayfullo Saipov is hailed as a 'soldier of the Caliphate'.
But crucially ISIS appeared to described Saipov as having been 'inspired' by their cause.
It would suggest he did not have any direct contact with the group and was not 'groomed' for terror by a leader.
Instead, Saipov would be the latest ISIS terrorist to have self-radicalised through the extremist's propaganda machine.
Looking dishevelled and slumped into a wheelchair, Saipov made his first court appearance on Wednesday where he was remanded in custody.
