At least seven people were killed and dozens more injured Saturday when a cliff fractured in Sul Minas, Brazil, sending rocks crashing onto three speedboats below. The horrifying moment in the Capitólio Canyons was captured on video as boats attempt to speed away but were engulfed beneath the falling debris and surging water. A spokesperson for the Minas Gerais Fire Department told The Washington Post authorities were looking for at least 20 people thought to be missing after the disaster. The destination is a popular tourist attraction, as the Rio Grande river snakes through the canyons, offering boaters scenic views of the towering cliffs.
New video shows the tense moments before the collapse of the giant rock face. The video shows parts of the stone crumbling, sending huge stones falling into the water. The boat from which the video was shot is seen immediately leaving the scene as the captain sensed danger. For some reason, 2 boats were slow to realize the danger and were smashed by the falling cliff.
