A deadly confrontation in Las Vegas left a man and a young child dead early this week after a volatile hostage situation spiraled out of control, according to police.
Officers were dispatched to an apartment complex shortly after 1:15 a.m. Tuesday following reports that a man was assaulting a woman while attempting to take a child. When police arrived, they spoke with the woman involved, who told officers the suspect was armed and had already discharged a firearm in the parking lot.
Witnesses familiar with the incident said the man was trying to force the child into his vehicle as officers moved in. Police say the situation escalated rapidly when the suspect retreated into a nearby residence with the child, effectively taking him hostage.
Las Vegas Police Captain Wiggins said additional law enforcement units were called as negotiations failed. The suspect later emerged from the residence holding the child at gunpoint and began walking toward officers. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, police say the man refused to comply.
Officers opened fire when the threat continued. During the exchange, authorities say the suspect also fired his weapon, striking the child.
First responders immediately rendered aid to the boy and rushed him to a nearby hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, the child did not survive. His mother later identified him as her 3 year old son, Kentre.
The suspect also died at the scene. Police have not yet released the names of the man or the woman involved.
Authorities say the shooting remains under active investigation as officials review body camera footage and witness statements to determine the full sequence of events.
