Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested in New Orleans after an alleged late-night confrontation spiraled into violence during Mardi Gras celebrations, police have said.
The 39-year-old star was taken into custody early Tuesday morning following an incident outside a business on Royal Street, a popular thoroughfare in the city’s historic French Quarter.
According to the New Orleans Police Department, LaBeouf had been asked to leave the venue after causing a disturbance. But officers say the situation escalated once he was removed from the building.
In a police statement, authorities said a victim reported that LaBeouf struck him multiple times with a closed fist after being escorted outside. Witnesses then claimed the actor briefly left the area, only to return moments later in an even more aggressive state.
Several bystanders reportedly attempted to restrain him and then released him so he could leave. However, police allege LaBeouf instead struck the same victim again, this time delivering punches to the upper body.
The confrontation allegedly continued when LaBeouf is said to have assaulted a second person, punching him in the nose. Witnesses again held the actor down until officers arrived at the scene.
LaBeouf was transported to a hospital to be treated for injuries described by police as “unknown” before being formally arrested upon his release. He was later charged with two counts of simple battery, according to police and booking records.
Authorities have not released details about what triggered the initial disturbance, and it remains unclear whether alcohol or other factors played a role in the incident.
The arrest marks another troubling chapter for the actor, whose career has frequently been overshadowed by public controversies and legal troubles, as Mardi Gras celebrations in the city continued around the scene of the alleged brawl.
