Skiers engulfed by terrifying ‘snow clouds’ as deadly avalanche crashes down popular Italian resort, leaving two dead
Holidaymakers enjoying a day on the slopes were plunged into terror after a huge avalanche thundered down a mountainside at Courmayeur ski resort, engulfing skiers in what witnesses described as blinding “snow clouds.”
The dramatic incident unfolded on the Italian side of Mont Blanc on Sunday, as vast sheets of snow broke free and roared downhill with devastating force.
Footage from the scene shows skiers desperately attempting to flee as the avalanche barrels towards them, swallowing the slope in seconds and reducing visibility to almost zero.
Tragically, two skiers lost their lives in the disaster, according to reports from Fox News.
Search and rescue teams raced against time in freezing conditions, deploying 15 rescuers, three canine units and two helicopters in a frantic bid to locate victims buried beneath the snow.
“One victim was transported to a hospital in serious condition but later died,” the outlet reported.
The popular alpine resort, known for its breathtaking views and challenging terrain, was left reeling as emergency crews combed the area for survivors, while stunned onlookers watched from a distance.
Avalanches are a constant threat in the high Alps, particularly during periods of unstable snow conditions, and the tragedy has once again highlighted the deadly risks faced by skiers venturing onto steep mountain slopes.
Local authorities have not yet confirmed whether weather conditions or off-piste skiing played a role in triggering the deadly slide.
