A massive explosion tore through a neighborhood in Santiago, Chile, after a truck carrying liquid gas slammed into a guardrail and detonated, killing four people and injuring at least 17 others in what witnesses described as a war zone level blast.
The incident unfolded on a normally quiet street lined with palm trees when the truck, operated by gas supplier Gasco, lost control and crashed. Seconds later, thick white smoke began flooding the area before the vehicle erupted into a towering fireball.
Video captured by a bystander shows the sky disappearing behind rolling clouds of smoke before a violent explosion bursts outward. The camera jolts wildly as the person filming runs for their life, fleeing the inferno as flames and debris engulf the street.
When the witness finally stops and turns back, the road is still burning as residents pour out of nearby buildings, stunned by the devastation.
Authorities confirmed four fatalities, including the truck driver. Seventeen others were injured, five of them critically. Claudio Orrego, governor of the Santiago metropolitan region, said one victim suffered burns over 100 percent of their body and faces imminent risk of death.
Firefighters reported the blast was felt within a radius of roughly 490 to 656 feet and that at least 50 vehicles were damaged or destroyed by the explosion and resulting fires.
Chile’s president Gabriel Boric confirmed that debris from the blast struck at least three nearby businesses, though officials said no additional large scale structural damage has been reported so far.
The area where the explosion occurred sits near a major highway and an industrial zone, raising serious questions about infrastructure safety and oversight involving hazardous materials moving through populated areas.
Carabineros de Chile police chief Victor Vielma said an investigation is underway to determine what caused the crash and subsequent explosion in the northern Santiago commune of Renca.
As officials promise answers, the footage continues circulating online as a chilling reminder of how quickly everyday streets can turn into disaster zones and how fragile public safety becomes when dangerous cargo meets system failure.
