A Florida college student is accused of giving birth in a toilet and watching her newborn daughter drown before allegedly placing the baby’s body in a bag and continuing with her normal routine, including attending a theater performance.
Authorities say Anne Mae Demegillo, 20, later led investigators to a shallow grave where the infant had been buried.
According to police, the disturbing incident began when Demegillo allegedly delivered the baby inside a toilet. Investigators say she admitted during questioning that she watched as the newborn struggled and cried before ultimately dying.
Officials say the baby girl was later placed in a duffel bag before Demegillo went about her day as if nothing had happened.
The infant’s body was eventually discovered after the student led authorities to a burial site where the baby had been placed in a small grave only three to five inches deep in the dirt.
Law enforcement officials described the details of the case as deeply troubling.
“I watched some of the interview, and I didn’t see any remorse,” said Joe Barile, a chief deputy involved in the investigation.
“For someone to stand and watch this, that’s tough,” he added.
Barile also said investigators were struck by what they described as a lack of remorse during questioning.
Authorities revealed the newborn girl weighed just three pounds and six ounces and measured more than 18 inches long.
The case has shocked the local community as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
