A figure long associated with some of the most shocking imagery to emerge from the Iraq War is now reportedly in Tehran, fueling alarm as tensions in the region continue to rise.
Abu Azrael, an Iraqi militia commander linked to Iran-backed forces, has re-emerged at a critical moment, with reports suggesting he is coordinating with elements aligned with the Iranian regime amid unrest and fears of wider conflict.
Azrael first rose to prominence during the Iraq conflict, where he was associated with fighting U.S. forces before becoming a leading figure within militias tied to Tehran, including Kataib al-Imam Ali.
But it was his public persona that made him infamous worldwide.
He became known for graphic and highly controversial videos and statements, in which he appeared to glorify extreme violence in wartime settings. In widely circulated clips and remarks attributed to him, he referenced brutal acts using weapons such as swords and axes, and used incendiary language when describing violence against enemies, including statements about burning bodies and other acts that drew widespread condemnation.
His slogan, “Illa tahin,” often translated as “I’ll grind you to dust,” became closely associated with his image online.
Even within his own ranks, his actions proved too extreme at times. Elements connected to Kataib al-Imam Ali reportedly distanced themselves from him following backlash over footage linked to his conduct during the conflict.
Human rights groups have also raised serious allegations regarding forces tied to him, including claims of executions, abuse of detainees, destruction of civilian areas, and sectarian targeting during operations. Units associated with Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces have faced accusations of looting, forced displacement, and targeting Sunni communities, though such claims are often difficult to independently verify in conflict zones.
Now, with his reported presence in Iran, attention is turning to what role he may play next.
Analysts warn that figures like Azrael, with deep battlefield experience and ties to militia networks, could become key players if tensions escalate further, particularly in scenarios involving unconventional or ground-based operations.
At the same time, much about his current activities remains unclear, with limited official confirmation and competing narratives continuing to emerge.
What is certain, however, is that the reappearance of such a controversial and widely recognized figure is likely to intensify scrutiny on Iran’s regional strategy and the shadow networks that continue to shape events behind the scenes.
