A heart-stopping video has captured the moment a hiker comes face-to-face with a charging bear on a narrow mountain trail in California, after a desperate attempt to scare the animal away appeared to backfire.
The frightening encounter took place in Sierra Madre, where hikers were walking along a popular trail in the San Gabriel Mountains when they suddenly spotted the animal just yards ahead.
Footage shows one hiker jumping and shaking bells in an apparent effort to frighten the bear and drive it off.
Instead, the opposite happens.
The bear begins moving toward him, then suddenly charges.
The man is forced to back away as the animal closes the distance, while another hiker filming the scene can be heard reacting in disbelief.
According to witnesses, the encounter unfolded quickly after the group stumbled upon the bear at close range, leaving little time to react.
Despite the terrifying moment, no injuries were reported, with those involved eventually managing to escape unharmed after retreating and allowing the animal to pass.
Experts and viewers alike have pointed out that the animal seen in the video is not a grizzly bear, despite its brown coloring, but a so-called “cinnamon” phase of the American black bear.
Grizzly bears have been extinct in California for more than a century, with only black bears currently inhabiting the region.
The incident has also reignited concerns about increasing human-bear encounters in Southern California, particularly in areas like the San Gabriel Mountains.
Wildlife officials note that black bear populations in the region have expanded in recent years, with animals becoming more comfortable venturing into areas frequented by humans in search of food.
Encounters on trails, and even in residential neighborhoods, have become more common, especially following recent wildfires that have disrupted natural habitats and pushed wildlife closer to urban areas.
Authorities typically advise hikers to remain calm, avoid sudden movements, and slowly back away if they encounter a bear, rather than attempting to startle it.
For many viewers, however, the video serves as a stark reminder of just how quickly a peaceful hike can turn into a life-threatening situation.
What begins as a routine walk through scenic mountain terrain can, in a matter of seconds, become a fight for survival against one of nature’s most powerful predators.
