The Internet Is Ruthlessly Cooking Mariah Carey After Her Live Performance Of “Hero” Sounded Like Drunk Karaoke Night
22 days ago
Look, there are certain songs in music history that are basically impossible to touch unless you’re operating at absolute peak performance. “Bohemian Rhapsody.” “I Will Always Love You.” The national anthem at a sporting event where everyone secretly hopes disaster happens.
And then there’s Mariah Carey singing “Hero.”
Which is why the internet immediately lost its mind after a clip surfaced from her surprise performance at the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Event in April 2026.
Because… man.
The video making the rounds online shows Mariah performing her iconic ballad in front of a packed crowd in New York City, except instead of sounding like one of the greatest vocalists ever assembled in a laboratory by music scientists, the performance sounded more like somebody’s aunt confidently attempting Mariah Carey at karaoke after three espresso martinis and a divorce.
And the internet has been absolutely merciless about it.
Almost immediately, social media turned into a full-scale vocal analysis convention. People were dissecting pitch problems, missed notes, octave struggles, breathing issues — basically acting like they were all suddenly judges on American Idol. One of the most repeated reactions online was that she sounded like someone impersonating Mariah Carey rather than the actual Mariah Carey herself.
There are moments where she genuinely sounds lost searching for the pitch, and some of the transitions into the higher register feel like the song and her vocal cords are currently involved in an active custody battle. You can almost hear the audience mentally trying to decide whether to clap supportively or stare at the floor.
