Escondido, California — A 69-year-old Army veteran known across San Diego County for his unapologetic display of American flags and pro-Trump banners is in critical condition after a savage assault in his own driveway, authorities said.
Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, of Escondido, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following the vicious attack on May 20, 2026.
Escondido police responded around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday to reports of an assault in the area of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street. Officers found the homeowner, identified as Kerry Sheron, suffering from significant injuries. A good Samaritan who intervened to help was also hurt in the chaos.
Butler fled the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended about a half-mile away after witnesses positively identified him. He lives just around the corner from Sheron and was booked into the Vista Detention Facility without bail.
The residence, long dubbed the "Trump House" by locals, has been a neighborhood landmark — and frequent target- for its extensive collection of Trump flags, MAGA memorabilia, and patriotic displays. Public records confirm Sheron as the owner, and the property has drawn complaints, vandalism, and online vitriol for years. Just weeks earlier, flags were reportedly torn down in an act of political vandalism.
Sheron remains hospitalized in the ICU at a local trauma center. No updates on his condition were available as of Thursday evening.
This incident comes amid a broader pattern of political violence and harassment targeting conservative voices and symbols, particularly in sanctuary-state California, where progressive rhetoric has often demonized patriotic displays as provocative.
Butler is scheduled for a court appearance on Friday. The Escondido Police Department continues to investigate and is asking for any additional witnesses to come forward.
