In a jaw-dropping display of bravery and split-second heroism, a Michigan police officer has been hailed as a lifesaver after he caught an infant hurled from a burning building – with flames licking at the family's heels.
Dramatic bodycam footage released this week shows the heart-stopping moment Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Michael Arnett positioned himself beneath a second-floor window and yelled up to a terrified mother: 'Hey, ma'am! Hey, throw me your kid! Kick out the screen!'
The incident unfolded on May 15, 2026, at a two-story home on Washington Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan, when fire crews raced to the scene and found the front porch completely engulfed in flames. A desperate mother and her baby were trapped upstairs as thick smoke poured from the house, cutting off their only escape route.
With no time to waste, Officer Arnett sprang into action. The mother, gripping her child, followed his urgent instructions, kicking out the window screen before dropping the infant into his waiting arms below.
In the heart-racing video, Arnett can be heard shouting 'I got it!' as he makes the perfect catch, securing the baby safely before handing the child off to colleagues. Firefighters then swiftly deployed a ladder, allowing the relieved mother to climb down to safety moments later.
Miraculously, neither the mother nor the baby suffered any injuries, though both were taken to the hospital for precautionary checks. Other occupants of the home also escaped unharmed. The house itself sustained significant damage, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Speaking afterwards, the humble hero – a four-year veteran who also has a child of his own – downplayed the drama but spoke from the heart.'So I knew the first thing I would do was get all the occupants out of the house,' Arnett said. 'Property can be replaced. Obviously, lives can't. It was a little adrenaline rush. Kind of a one-shot opportunity there.'
