MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Talk about a plot twist straight out of Hollywood. An 85-year-old AMC movie theater employee who’s been slinging popcorn and hauling trash for 45 years is suddenly sitting on a small fortune, thanks to the power of social media and the big hearts of total strangers.
Mary Ellen Eron, affectionately known as “Miss Mary,” was captured on video struggling with a heavy black garbage bag and pushing a cleaning cart at the AMC in Maryville, just south of Knoxville. The heart-wrenching clip, filmed by 21-year-old theatergoer Brooklyn Green on May 30, exploded across TikTok with more than 13 million views.
“Let’s secretly help retire this beautiful woman. No one deserves to work at this age,” Green captioned the post before launching a GoFundMe titled “Help an Elderly Theater Worker Enjoy Retirement.”
The response was nothing short of miraculous. More than 7,500 donors poured in nearly $146,000 in just days before the campaign was paused at Eron’s request. She’s overwhelmed, blessed — and still plans to keep working part-time.
“I am overwhelmed and certainly blessed from the Lord and you wonderful people. Thank you,” Eron said in a statement. Green, who presented the windfall to the grateful grandma, said she was moved watching the spry senior hustle through her shift. “I just decided that she was working so hard, and I aspired to be like her one day,” the young Good Samaritan told reporters.
Eron has worked in movie theaters for nearly half a century. She’s known locally for her kindness, often helping the homeless and supporting her church with whatever she can. Despite the cash bonanza, she’s not ready for full retirement just yet. “She loves the work” and wants to stay active, sources close to the story said. Part of the money will go toward helping others in need, true to her generous spirit.
