A desperate Russian woman nearly choked to death in her own smoke-filled apartment after phone scammers tricked her into setting it ablaze for a fake insurance payout, and one conman watched the entire fiery nightmare unfold in real time on a video call, barking commands like a sadistic director.

The shocking incident happened the evening of June 18 in a first-floor apartment inside a nine-story building on Molodogvardeytsev Street in Chelyabinsk. The resident had already fallen for the scheme and wired the crooks 40,000 rubles — about $550, after they promised her a big insurance windfall if she burned the place down and recorded the “evidence.”

But handing over the cash wasn’t enough. The scammers kept her on a live video call, directing her every move as the flames grew.

She was told to light her bed on fire. Then came the order to throw in more paper to intensify the blaze. The scammer insisted she stay inside the room “according to the procedure” and wait exactly five minutes, claiming there was no danger even as thick smoke filled the apartment and made breathing almost impossible.

The woman obeyed at first, filming the arson as instructed. Only when she started struggling to breathe did she finally bolt for safety.

Firefighters from Station No. 101 raced to the scene. They evacuated 10 residents from the building, including some from the sixth floor who needed gas-and-smoke protection gear and rescue equipment, and quickly extinguished the fire. The blaze damaged roughly 20 square meters of her apartment, charring personal belongings and the interior. Miraculously, no one was hurt.

The chilling video of the guided arson has since spread online, showing the woman complying with the remote instructions as the room fills with smoke and flames.

Russian authorities have opened a criminal fraud case against the scammers, treating the woman as a manipulated victim. Investigators are also examining whether the live directives, especially the order to stay in the burning, smoke-filled room, endangered her life.
