A cold-blooded kidnapping suspect shot and killed his victim inside the trunk of a car in full view of sheriff’s deputies during a traffic stop in an upscale Chino Hills neighborhood late Wednesday night, authorities said, before the gunman was cut down in a hail of police gunfire.

The shocking sequence of events unfolded just after 10 p.m. on July 29 in the quiet residential streets of Chino Hills, California. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots and someone screaming for help in the 2100 block of Monteverde Drive.

Investigators later determined the male victim had already been shot once at a home on that street and forced into the trunk of a vehicle before the suspects fled. Deputies spotted the car speeding away, attempted a traffic stop, and pursued it for roughly a mile after the driver failed to yield. The chase ended on Wandering Ridge Drive.

Surveillance video from the scene shows the vehicle coming to a stop under flashing emergency lights. Deputies ordered the two men inside to exit. The passenger complied, emerging with his hands raised and surrendering without incident. The driver, however, stepped out, walked back to the trunk, opened it, and fired a shot into the confined space where the kidnapped man was trapped.

“The driver exited the vehicle, approached the trunk of the suspect vehicle and fired a shot into a victim that was inside the trunk,” Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Gloria Orejel said.

Deputies immediately opened fire, striking the suspect. Both the gunman and the man in the trunk were pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. No deputies were injured.

The footage, widely circulating and matching accounts from local news outlets, captures the tense nighttime scene: the stopped car, figures moving under the glow of police lights, and the sudden escalation as the driver returns to the trunk. Additional clips in the compilation show the Monteverde Drive street sign, emergency vehicles flooding the neighborhood, and a local resident reacting to the violence that shattered the normally peaceful area.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victim or the deceased suspect. A second man, the passenger, was taken into custody. Investigators are still working to determine the relationship between the parties and the motive behind the kidnapping and double shooting.

The brazen nature of the killing, executing a bound and already wounded man in front of armed law enforcement officers, has stunned the community. Residents described hearing the initial gunfire and cries for help, only for the nightmare to continue a short distance away under the watch of deputies who had responded to stop it.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the full circumstances of the case. The passenger remains in custody as detectives piece together what led to the deadly confrontation in the heart of Chino Hills.
