Panic On Costa Del Sol As Giant 300kg Tuna 'Chases' Swimmer Onto Shore And Beaches Itself In Front Of Screaming Holidaymakers

Horrified sunseekers fled for their lives on a packed Spanish beach after a massive tuna, believed to weigh as much as 300kg, charged through the shallows, pursued a bather right up to the sand and then thrashed violently as it became stranded.

Dramatic footage captured on Saturday afternoon shows the enormous fish, more than two metres long, powering towards the shore at Playa del Ancón in Marbella, on the exclusive Golden Mile stretch of the Costa del Sol.

In the chaotic scenes, the powerful creature appears to follow one male swimmer from deeper water almost to the water’s edge, sending bathers scrambling up the sand in panic while others stand frozen, phones out, recording every second of the extraordinary encounter near the popular Victors Beach chiringuito.

The huge fish, identified by local media and witnesses as a bluefin tuna, then becomes beached in the shallows, thrashing its powerful tail and body in a frenzy of white spray as crowds gather around it.

“People were screaming and running,” one shocked onlooker told local reporters. “At first everyone thought it was a shark. It was huge, and so close.”

Witnesses estimated the specimen could tip the scales at around 300 kilograms, though official confirmation of its exact size and species has yet to come from Marbella authorities. Bluefin tuna of this scale are prized and highly regulated in Spanish waters, where they make seasonal migrations through the Mediterranean.

Video shared widely online, including by local outlet 101tv Málaga, shows the fish repeatedly breaking the surface, its dark body and distinctive fins clearly visible just metres from families on the busy August beach. Holidaymakers can be seen pointing, backing away, and then clustering for a closer look once the initial terror subsided.

Some witnesses claimed the animal may have been injured or disoriented, explaining its unusual behaviour of coming so close to shore. In heartwarming scenes later, several beachgoers sprang into action, using sun loungers and plastic chairs to carefully push the massive fish back into deeper water.

“Thanks to the people who helped shove it with chairs and sunbeds, it managed to get back out,” one social media user who filmed the rescue said.

Miraculously, no one was hurt. The man the tuna appeared to follow made it safely out of the water, and local lifeguards and the town hall have so far issued no formal statement or beach closure.

The incident, which unfolded on Saturday 8 August, has gone viral, with videos racking up more than a million views within hours. Social media users joked about the potential value of the fish (“that’s a £10,000 dinner right there”) while others expressed relief it wasn’t a shark after all.

Playa del Ancón is a popular sandy stretch between Marbella’s old town and glamorous Puerto Banús, typically thronged with British and European tourists during the peak summer season. Large pelagic fish including bluefin tuna are known to cruise these waters, but it is extremely rare for one of this size to come so close to a crowded beach, let alone follow a swimmer and beach itself in broad daylight.

Experts note that stressed or injured tuna can sometimes become disoriented and head for shallows. Whatever the reason, the giant visitor provided one of the most dramatic – and unexpected – spectacles of the Spanish holiday season so far.

For now, the magnificent fish is back where it belongs, leaving behind only the viral videos… and a lot of very relieved bathers who won’t forget their close encounter with Marbella’s monster tuna any time soon.
