A 25-year-old woman stunned onlookers and medical staff when she delivered her premature baby while still sitting on a motorcycle outside a hospital in Vietnam.

The dramatic scenes, captured on video and now going viral around the world, show the young mother giving birth to her son on the back of the bike after her husband frantically raced her to hospital.

The couple had set off for Phu Luong Hospital in Thai Nguyen province on August 3 after the woman, who was 32 weeks pregnant, suddenly began experiencing intense abdominal pain at home.

But nature would not wait.

Before they could even reach the hospital entrance, the mother went into full labour and delivered the baby while still perched on the motorcycle.

Footage circulating online shows the barefoot woman carefully being helped off the bike by her husband and hospital staff, with the umbilical cord still attached and amniotic fluid visible on the seat.

Nurses and doctors in white coats and gloves rushed out to the scene, quickly assessing the newborn, wrapping him to keep him warm, and cutting the cord before transferring both mother and baby inside for further care.

The little boy weighed around 2kg, small but not unexpected for a birth at 32 weeks, and both he and his mum are reported to be in stable condition and recovering well.

Local reports described the delivery as a case of precipitous labour, where birth happens extremely quickly, often in under three hours from the start of contractions. Prior pregnancies can make such rapid deliveries more common.

What a start to life for the little one — arriving into the world on two wheels.
