A 17-year-old Massachusetts high school student has been charged with the brutal murders of his mother and younger brother just hours after using the AI chatbot ChatGPT to explore graphic fantasy stories involving the killing of his family, according to prosecutors.
Arjun Aravind of Acton, an affluent suburb about 20 miles northwest of Boston, faces two counts of murder in the deaths of his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind. The victims were found dead inside the family’s Martha Lane home on the evening of August 11, 2026, following a well-being check requested by the father.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan described the scene as showing signs of a violent struggle, with both victims suffering “obvious trauma.” Siddharth was discovered on the first floor, while his mother was found in the finished basement. The exact causes of death remain pending a ruling from the medical examiner’s office.
Ryan told reporters that Aravind had been “demonstrating some concerning behavior” in the months leading up to the killings, including extensive use of the internet and ChatGPT to generate “theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family.”
“He was engaged in the use of ChatGPT in creating fantasy stories, kind of the gothic novel kind of stories, asking questions, creating characters, asking what about this if this happened to that, and they seem to appear to relate to threats to his family,” Ryan said.
Authorities noted that some of the AI interactions occurred hours before the bodies were discovered. Aravind allegedly fled the home in his mother’s vehicle and was arrested without incident early the next morning after police spotted the car in a parking lot in nearby Wayland.
The teen, a student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, was arraigned in Concord District Court, where a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf. He was ordered held without bail. His attorney has requested a psychiatric evaluation, citing possible mental health issues.
Ryan called the case “an unspeakable tragedy” and “an incredibly dark day” for the community. Investigators continue to examine the full scope of Aravind’s online activity and any other factors that may have contributed to the family tragedy.
The case has drawn national attention to the potential risks of advanced AI tools in the hands of troubled teens, as prosecutors continue building their case ahead of further court proceedings.
