A 12-year-old girl was left standing motionless and screaming as a cloud of bees covered her face, neck, and hair until a passing motorbike courier ran straight into the swarm and dragged her to safety.
The horrifying scene unfolded on Monday afternoon outside a municipal school in Ibirité, in the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area of Minas Gerais, after a hive fell from a tree near the entrance on Rua Flor de Liz.
Safira Emanuele Gomes dos Santos Rosa had gone with her grandfather to collect her younger sister from after-school activities when the insects exploded into the street. Relatives said the grandfather and the younger girl managed to run. Safira did not. She froze.
Delivery rider Vinícius Martins de Paulo, 34, known online as Moto Vinny, was heading back to work when his helmet camera captured the girl pressed into a corner, crying and unable to move as bees crawled over her.‘I saw her in the corner, standing still and crying. She was paralysed,’ he said. ‘I called her about three times and she didn’t answer. So I went and pulled her.’
He first tried to get her onto the bike. When that failed, he grabbed a can of deodorant from the box on his motorcycle and sprayed it at the insects as he hauled the child toward the school door.‘I thought of my daughters,’ the father of two later explained.
Staff then turned a hose on the girl to knock the remaining bees off her body. She collapsed after the soaking. Martins said bees had even been in her nose. He was stung about 40 times himself during the rescue.
Doctors estimated Safira suffered more than 100 stings, most of them to her face, neck and head, with further bites inside her mouth and on her tongue. Her family believes the true number may be higher.
She was taken first to an emergency unit in Sarzedo, then transferred to the municipal hospital in Contagem, where she remains in the paediatric intensive care unit. Officials say she is stable and improving, but tests remain abnormal, and there is no confirmed discharge date. Her younger sister was treated and sent home. Martins also sought medical care. The school director was among others stung while helping.
Firefighters later removed the fallen hive. The attack happened as children were leaving the after-school centre that serves several local municipal schools. Several pupils and passers-by were hit as the agitated bees spread through the street.
The helmet-cam footage, chaotic, close-range and almost unbearable to watch, shows Martins pulling the girl through the swarm while bystanders shout and a hose is turned on the victims. The clip has raced across social media after his channel posted it, and it was shared widely, including in a Turkish news post that helped send the video around the world.
What it shows is simple and brutal: a child who could not run, and a stranger who ran toward her anyway.
