Police and other emergency services are responding to a mass shooting on West Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park, just east of Los Angeles, officials and witnesses say. Multiple people have died. Early Reports indicate 10 dead with 19 shot.
The incident happened just after 10:30 p.m. on Saturday when officers were called for reports of an active shooter at or near 122 West Garvey Avenue, where multiple businesses are located.
According to initial reports, more than a dozen people have been injured, including multiple victims who have succumbed to their injuries. Specific figures were not immediately confirmed.
Details about the circumstances of Saturday night’s shooting were also not yet known. The shooting happened at a time when it was busy for Chinese New Year, and the area is home to multiple Asian businesses.
Two witnesses said they heard gunfire but initially assumed it was fireworks.
