A Delta Air Lines flight was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff on Wednesday when a passenger tried to enter the cockpit, the pilot reported to air traffic controllers.
Delta Flight 2557, a Boeing 717 carrying 85 passengers and five crew members, had just departed from Houston’s Hobby Airport en route to Atlanta when the incident occurred.
In a radio recording obtained from Broadcastify, the pilot can be heard alerting controllers: “We had a passenger get up and try to access the cockpit. Can you coordinate and have security standing by?”
After confirming that the cockpit was secure, the pilot requested that police and paramedics meet the aircraft upon landing. He added that the unruly passenger had been handcuffed in the rear of the plane but had also assaulted another passenger, who needed to be checked by medical personnel.
The flight signaled an emergency using its transponder and returned safely to Hobby Airport about 17 minutes after takeoff, escorted by emergency vehicles to the gate.
“They are coming to the gate. The police are there waiting,” an air traffic controller instructed first responders. “Follow the aircraft to the ramp.”
Delta confirmed the flight landed without further incident and that authorities were handling the situation on the ground. The passenger involved is now in custody, and the airline is cooperating with investigators to determine how the situation unfolded.
Passengers on board described the event as tense but praised the crew for their quick and professional response, ensuring everyone’s safety during the emergency landing.
