Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy is pushing back after a tense confrontation at the U.S. Capitol in which the former Navy SEAL appeared to forcefully restrain a protester, a moment punctuated by a loud “snap” that quickly spread across social media.
The incident occurred during a hearing of the United States Senate Armed Services Committee when Marine Corps veteran Brian McGinnis allegedly interrupted proceedings and refused to leave the room.
According to reports, officers from the United States Capitol Police attempted to escort McGinnis out after the disruption. Video circulating online appears to show a struggle breaking out as McGinnis resisted being removed.
At one point during the scuffle, Sheehy — who previously served as a Navy SEAL — stepped in to assist. During the confrontation, a loud snapping sound could be heard, leading to claims that McGinnis’ arm may have been injured during the restraint.
Sheehy later released a statement describing the situation as an attempt to help law enforcement regain control of a chaotic scene.
“Capitol Police were attempting to remove an unhinged protestor from the Armed Services hearing. He was fighting back. I decided to help out and de-escalate the situation,” Sheehy said.
The Montana senator also accused McGinnis of intentionally provoking a confrontation inside the Capitol.
“This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation, and he got one,” Sheehy added. “I hope he gets the help he needs without causing further violence.”
Authorities say McGinnis now faces multiple charges stemming from the incident, including three counts of assaulting a police officer and three counts of resisting arrest. He has also been charged with unlawful demonstration inside the Capitol complex.
The clash has quickly drawn attention online, with supporters praising Sheehy for stepping in to assist police, while critics questioned whether a sitting senator should have physically intervened.
The situation remains under review as authorities move forward with the charges against McGinnis.
