A 22-year-old man has been arrested after police say a 94-year-old woman was brutally attacked in her own home, leaving her with broken bones in a shocking case that has sparked outrage in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Police say the suspect, identified as Jeremiah Taylor, was taken into custody and is accused of carrying out the horrifying assault on the elderly victim.
Authorities allege the attack left the 94 year old woman seriously injured, with reports indicating she suffered multiple broken bones during the incident.
The disturbing case has also ignited anger within the local police department after officials revealed Taylor had previously been arrested for a string of serious crimes including rape, burglary, and unauthorized entry.
During a tense press conference, TJ Morse, the chief of the Baton Rouge Police Department, appeared visibly frustrated as he addressed reporters about the suspect’s criminal history and questioned how the situation was allowed to happen.
According to Morse, a previous arrest involving Taylor had been dismissed by prosecutors, a decision that has now come under renewed scrutiny following the latest allegations.
That earlier case was dropped by the office of Hillar Moore, the district attorney for East Baton Rouge Parish, according to local station WAFB 9.
“It is a source of frustration in our department and with our officers,” Morse told reporters.
“Why this has happened is some questions that I would love you all to ask the rest of the judicial system.”
The chief’s comments highlighted growing tensions between law enforcement and prosecutors over how repeat offenders are handled in the justice system.
Police have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, but officials confirmed that the victim survived the incident and is receiving medical treatment.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Baton Rouge community, where residents are demanding answers about how a suspect with a prior arrest for rape was able to remain free before the alleged assault on one of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
Taylor remains in custody as the investigation continues.
