In a shocking case that has rocked a Florida family, the 16-year-old stepbrother of popular high school cheerleader Anna Kepner has been indicted as an adult on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse after allegedly assaulting and killing the 18-year-old during a family vacation aboard a Carnival Cruise ship.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Monday that T.H., 16, of Titusville, Florida, faces life in prison if convicted over the horrific death of his stepsister, whose body was discovered concealed under a bed in their shared cabin.
Tragic Anna Kepner, a bright and bubbly senior at Temple Christian School in Titusville and a dedicated cheerleader, was on the Carnival Horizon with her father, stepmother and stepsiblings for what should have been a relaxing Caribbean getaway in November 2025.
On November 6, after enjoying dinner with her family, the kind-hearted teenager told relatives she wasn't feeling well and headed back to the cabin she was sharing with two other teens, including her younger stepbrother.
The next morning, when her dad and stepmother rounded up the family for breakfast, Anna was nowhere to be found. Around 11am, a horrified housekeeper made the grim discovery: the 18-year-old's body was stuffed under the bed, wrapped in a blanket and covered with life jackets in a desperate bid to hide the crime.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death as mechanical asphyxiation – a brutal end for the fun-loving girl who adored swimming in the lake near her home and always lit up a room with her laughter.
Now, federal prosecutors say the nightmare unfolded while the ship was sailing in international waters en route back to Miami. According to court records, T.H. allegedly sexually assaulted Anna before intentionally killing her on or about November 6-7, 2025.
The stepbrother was initially charged as a juvenile in February this year, with the case kept under seal due to his age. But a federal judge later ordered he be prosecuted as an adult after prosecutors highlighted the extreme seriousness of the allegations – murder combined with sexual assault.
T.H. has been indicted by a grand jury on the most serious charges, and if found guilty could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Anna's devastated biological mother, Heather Wright, spoke out after learning of the new details, saying she was relieved her daughter would see justice in adult court but couldn't bear to think about the sexual abuse element.'I'm just happy that my daughter got justice and that they tried him as an adult,' Wright said. 'With regards to the newly revealed sexual abuse charge, I don't even really want to think about that one, because I can't even begin to imagine what she went through.'Friends and classmates remembered Anna as a 'beautiful soul' whose warmth and energy touched everyone around her. The school described her as a 'bright, kind-hearted young woman' who brought joy to the classroom.
The case first sparked intense speculation and heartbreak back in November when news broke of the teenager's death aboard the cruise ship. Her family has been left shattered by the unimaginable betrayal within their own blended household.
T.H. appeared in federal court in Miami earlier this year and was allowed to remain free pending trial under strict conditions, including living with an uncle and wearing an electronic monitor.
The development comes after months of sealed proceedings, with the full horror of the allegations only now coming to light as the court file was unsealed.
Carnival Cruise Line has not commented publicly on the charges, but the tragedy has cast a dark shadow over what is normally a time of celebration for families at sea.
Anna's loved ones, including her grandparents, have expressed gratitude that the investigation has led to these charges, saying they always suspected foul play and have been waiting for answers. This is a developing story.
