A disturbing video has emerged showing a group of rowdy youths harassing a man in his car at one of Paris's most popular spots, spraying him with water and clambering all over his vehicle while he tries to defend himself with a crutch.
The shocking incident unfolded at the scenic Canal Saint-Martin in the French capital amid a sweltering heatwave, with temperatures soaring and Parisians out enjoying the sunshine, only for the peaceful scene to descend into chaos.
In the 43-second clip, shared widely on social media, a silver Fiat hatchback is seen inching along the tree-lined street as a mob of shirtless young men swarm around it.
Some of the youths, many appearing to be teenagers or in their early twenties and dressed in shorts, gleefully blast the driver and his car with water pistols and bottles, soaking the windscreen and interior through the open window. Others climb onto the bonnet, jumping and banging on the roof and hood while laughing and shouting.
The driver, who appears to be an older man and is visibly handicapped, can be seen reaching out of the driver's side window with a crutch, waving it angrily in an attempt to repel the attackers and clear them from his vehicle. At one point, he brandishes it like a weapon as the youths continue their harassment, with one shirtless boy in blue shorts clambering across the front of the car.
Bystanders film the confrontation on their phones as the car slowly tries to move forward, with a shared bike visible in the foreground and classic Parisian buildings, graffiti-covered walls, and cafes in the background. The video ends with the youths scattering across a zebra crossing as the car pulls away.
The footage has sparked outrage online, with hundreds of furious comments pouring in within hours. Many viewers slammed the 'racaille' – French slang for thugs or scum – and questioned where the parents were.
The incident has been seized upon as yet another example of declining civility in France, with critics pointing to a lack of police presence, parental oversight, and broader failures in integration. 'This country is turning into a disgusting squat,' one commenter raged. 'Anarchy everywhere.'Many expressed fears that ordinary French citizens are losing patience: 'The French will end up losing patience, and it will end very badly... These parasites respect nothing and no one.'Canal Saint-Martin, a trendy area popular with locals and tourists for its locks, picnics, and bars, has seen an increase in reports of antisocial behaviour in recent years.
This latest video comes as France grapples with ongoing debates over urban youth crime, immigration, and public order under President Macron's government. With similar chaotic scenes reported in other cities, many are asking: How much more can the silent majority take?
