There’s sad, and then there’s whatever the hell is going on in this Detroit driver’s ed video.
A local instructor who goes by @mr_roadready posted footage of what he bluntly calls the most confused student he’s ever trained. The setting is a Tesla. The student is a young woman in a bright pink top. And within the first 30 seconds, it becomes painfully clear that the concept of “driving a car” is not landing.
She stares at the steering wheel like it’s a foreign object. She questions the pedals. She needs multiple explanations about what her foot is supposed to do. At one point, the instructor is pointing and patiently walking her through the absolute basics while she processes everything in slow motion. Subtitles flash things like “STILL GOTTA THINK” and moments of pure bewilderment. It’s not staged chaos. It’s just pure, unfiltered confusion in real time.
The video has that perfect mix of secondhand embarrassment and dark comedy. You’re watching someone try to learn a skill most people pick up in high school, and it’s somehow not clicking. The instructor stays professional and keeps coaching, which somehow makes the whole thing even funnier and more tragic at the same time. You want her to succeed. You also can’t look away.
Detroit has produced plenty of memorable characters over the years. This one just happens to be sitting in the driver’s seat of a Tesla, trying to figure out which pedal does what while the rest of us watch through our fingers. It’s the kind of clip that makes you text your group chat with zero context and the simple caption: “Holy sh*t.”
