ITAITUBA, Brazil — Dramatic video captured Brazilian Army soldiers pulling a helpless dog from the crushing coils of a massive anaconda in the heart of the Amazon, in a rescue that ended with a heartwarming twist no one saw coming.
The footage, which has exploded across social media, shows troops from the 53rd Jungle Infantry Battalion springing into action after spotting the snake wrapped tightly around the small white dog near a lake on their base in Itaituba, in Pará state. Soldiers grab the reptile by the tail and neck, dragging the struggling pair onto a paved road as they work to unwind the powerful constrictor.
“She was already showing no signs of life, she was underwater,” Sgt. Danton later recalled. The team yanked the dog free by her paws. It was the second dog the snake had targeted that day.
Once the anaconda released its grip, Danton immediately began chest compressions. The dog gasped, twitched, opened her eyes, and bolted alive.
The snake, a sucuri measuring more than three meters, was later safely removed by environmental authorities and relocated away from the barracks. No soldiers were injured.
What happened next turned a tense wildlife encounter into a story of loyalty. Moved by the dog’s fight for survival, Danton decided she would not return to the streets. He adopted her, named her Mel, and brought her home. Video from the days after the rescue shows the sergeant kneeling in the grass, gently petting the now-calm dog wearing a harness, then walking her on a leash across the base grounds.
The incident highlights both the raw dangers of life in the Amazon and the quiet competence of jungle-trained troops who train daily for exactly this kind of unexpected crisis. Mel is now receiving veterinary care and living with Danton and his family. The sergeant said he simply could not leave her behind after watching her come back from the edge.“I was moved by the story,” he said. “This was the best option.”
