Federal agents in South Texas uncovered more than 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine stuffed inside a commercial cabbage shipment, according to the DEA.
The massive haul, announced Thursday by the DEA’s McAllen office in the Rio Grande Valley, involved drugs concealed within what appeared to be ordinary produce. Agents peeled back cabbage leaves in video released by the agency, revealing tightly wrapped green packages hidden inside the vegetables. Rows of evidence boxes later displayed the scale of the seizure.
“More than 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in a shipment of cabbage were seized by the DEA McAllen office in the Rio Grande Valley,” the DEA Houston Division stated. The agency called it a “major seizure” conducted as part of a Homeland Security Task Force investigation.
Multiple agencies participated, including Homeland Security Investigations, the FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Officials have not released the exact location of the stop or identified any suspects in the initial announcement. The investigation remains open.
The concealment method is a familiar tactic along the southern border, where traffickers routinely hide large quantities of methamphetamine and other drugs inside legitimate produce shipments moving north. This latest interdiction removed a significant volume of the drug before it could reach American streets.
Law enforcement officials described the operation as an example of coordinated enforcement producing results against cross-border trafficking networks.
