Canadian authorities are investigating a deadly shooting at a secondary school in northeastern British Columbia that left 10 people dead, as new details about the suspected shooter circulate online.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around 1:20 p.m. local time at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, located in the small community of Tumbler Ridge, roughly 1,100 kilometers north of Vancouver. Police responded to reports of an active shooter at the school, prompting officials to issue a public safety alert urging residents to remain indoors.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has not officially identified the suspect. However, Canadian outlets Western Standard and Juno News have reported that the alleged shooter was Jesse Strang, identified in those reports as 17 years old, citing information said to have come from a close family member.
According to those outlets, Strang began transitioning at age 15 and was reportedly taking prescription antidepressants, including SSRIs, though authorities have not confirmed any medical history. Juno News also reported that a public YouTube account believed to belong to Strang displayed a transgender pride flag and listed the pronouns “she/her.”
Video footage circulating on social media, which has not been verified by law enforcement, appears to show Strang firing a pistol at a shooting range. The footage has raised additional questions about prior access to firearms and whether warning signs may have been missed.
Officials have confirmed that the primary suspect died at the scene, but investigators continue to review the timeline of events, examine potential red flags, and determine whether any additional individuals were involved.
