Horror unfolded ringside as boxer Joseph George collapsed between rounds of his fight with Atif Oberlton, leaving fans and fighters stunned in chilling scenes in Detroit.
The light heavyweight bout, which served as the chief support on the undercard of Claressa Shields’ highly anticipated rematch with Franchon Crews-Dezurn, came to an abrupt and deeply unsettling end after just one round.
George appeared to make it safely through the opening round and returned to his corner as normal. He even accepted water from his trainer, giving no immediate sign that anything was wrong. Moments later, however, the situation took a terrifying turn as he suddenly collapsed backwards onto his stool before slumping to the canvas.
Broadcast cameras quickly cut away as George lay unconscious on the ground, while replays appeared to show a clash of heads during the opening round that may have contributed to the frightening incident. The delayed reaction only added to the alarm inside the arena.
Oberlton instantly realised the seriousness of what was unfolding and rushed across the ring to George’s corner, visibly concerned for his opponent’s wellbeing as medical staff stepped in.
George eventually managed to get back to his feet but looked dazed and disoriented, clearly struggling to understand where he was. He was guided back onto his stool before being escorted from the arena, with the crowd watching on in worried silence.
The bout was officially waved off, with Oberlton awarded a technical knockout victory, moving him to a perfect 15 and 0 record. It marked the most bizarre and sobering win of his career, one that was overshadowed entirely by concern for George’s health.
