A viral video from February 14 shows an unexpected customer casually wandering into a Dia supermarket in Rio Branco, and no, it wasn’t a confused tourist. It was a full-size capybara, and it behaved better than most people in the checkout line.
The clip shows the massive rodent calmly strolling through the store as stunned shoppers pull out their phones. Instead of panicking, store security responds in the most Brazil-coded way possible: they gently place the capybara into a bright yellow shopping cart and wheel it back outside, while customers laugh and film like this is just another Tuesday.
Capybaras, which are native to South America and can weigh up to 65 kilograms, are no strangers to human spaces in Brazil. According to wildlife reports from the Brazilian Institute of Environment, expanding cities are fragmenting wetland habitats, pushing animals like capybaras to wander into urban areas in search of food scraps and safe resting spots.
And if you’re wondering why the capybara looked completely unbothered by fluorescent lights, crowds, and being chauffeured in a cart, science has answers.
Research published in the Journal of Mammalogy notes that capybaras have naturally low cortisol levels, meaning they tend to stay remarkably calm even when surrounded by humans. Translation: this animal was emotionally built for retail.
Social media immediately fell in love. Comments ranged from “He’s just here for snacks” to “That capybara has better vibes than me on my best day.” Others joked that the rodent was simply doing Valentine’s Day grocery shopping.
The capybara was safely released outside the store, unharmed and seemingly unfazed — leaving behind viral fame, a supermarket legend, and a reminder that nature will absolutely run errands if given the chance.
