Police in California have launched an investigation into a possible hate crime after several Israeli Americans were allegedly assaulted while speaking Hebrew in public, an incident that has sparked outrage from local leaders and members of the Jewish community.
The attack took place in San Jose, where authorities say the victims reported that their attackers used antisemitic language during the assault.
According to initial reports, the victims told police that the attackers targeted them after hearing them speak Hebrew, a language widely spoken in Israel. The victims also reported that antisemitic slurs were allegedly used during the confrontation, raising concerns that the attack may have been motivated by hostility toward Jewish people or Israelis.
Police have not yet confirmed whether arrests have been made, but authorities said the possibility of a hate crime is being actively examined as part of the investigation.
Ro Khanna condemned the incident after reports of the attack surfaced, describing the alleged assault as deeply disturbing.
“The assault on Israeli Americans in San Jose while speaking Hebrew is horrific,” Khanna said in a statement responding to the incident.
Matt Mahan also addressed the situation, saying city officials are closely monitoring developments and coordinating with local authorities and community leaders.
“I have been in touch with our police department and leaders in the local Jewish community regarding this deeply disturbing incident and will continue to monitor the situation closely,” Mahan said.
The investigation comes amid broader concerns about antisemitic incidents across the United States, with community organizations reporting an increase in harassment, threats, and violence targeting Jewish individuals in recent years.
Law enforcement agencies typically examine several factors when determining whether an incident qualifies as a hate crime, including statements made by suspects, evidence of bias, and the circumstances surrounding the attack. If investigators determine the assault was motivated by antisemitic bias, suspects could face enhanced criminal charges.
Police in San Jose have not yet released the identities of the victims or provided detailed information about when the incident occurred. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as detectives gather witness statements and review any available surveillance footage.
City officials and community leaders have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward as investigators work to determine exactly what happened and whether the attack was motivated by hate.
