A shocking chain-reaction crash involving a fire truck left one person dead and ten others injured Tuesday evening in Brooklyn, New York City, after a violent collision triggered a multi-vehicle pileup that authorities say unfolded in seconds.
Emergency crews rushed to the chaotic scene in the city’s Gravesend, Brooklyn neighborhood shortly after 6:45 p.m., where twisted vehicles and flashing lights filled the intersection following the devastating crash.
According to police, the incident began when a van traveling north on West 11th Street slammed into a vehicle belonging to the New York City Fire Department that was driving along Avenue S.
The impact set off a terrifying domino effect.
Authorities say the FDNY truck was forced into an Access-A-Ride van — a city service that transports elderly and disabled passengers — which was then pushed into a nearby Lexus SUV.
Inside the Access-A-Ride van was a 78-year-old passenger who suffered critical injuries in the violent collision. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died, police confirmed.
Ten others were hurt in the crash, including five FDNY firefighters who had been inside the truck at the time of the collision. Several drivers and passengers from the other vehicles were also transported to local hospitals with injuries, though officials said most were not believed to be life-threatening.
Dramatic footage circulating online shows the mangled vehicles scattered across the intersection as emergency responders swarm the scene, highlighting the scale of the destruction left behind by the crash.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victim or those injured.
Investigators are now working to piece together exactly how the devastating sequence of events unfolded, including what may have caused the initial collision that triggered the deadly pileup.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
