A disturbing murder case out of Arizona is sending shockwaves across the country after a suspect accused of crucifying a Christian pastor is now openly begging a judge to sentence him to death.
Authorities say 76-year-old pastor Bill Schonemann was discovered in a scene described as horrifying and ritualistic, lying in his bed with his arms stretched wide and pinned to the wall. A crown of thorns had been placed on his head, echoing the crucifixion imagery associated with Jesus Christ.
Investigators say the man responsible, Christopher Sheafe, has already confessed to the brutal killing and claimed the attack was part of a larger plan targeting Christian leaders.
According to reports, Sheafe allegedly intended to murder as many as 14 pastors and Christian figures in what authorities believe was a calculated and ideologically driven plot.
The suspect, who has reportedly expressed an obsession with the Old Testament, is now demanding the ultimate punishment from the court.
Sheafe told the judge he wants the death penalty.
“Before I was even indicted, I gave a full confession to the FBI. I did four interviews with four separate media outlets,” Sheafe reportedly said during proceedings.
He did not attempt to minimize the crime.
Instead, he appeared to emphasize its brutality.
“It’s an undisputable fact that the crime was heinous in nature. I intended it to be heinous,” he said.
The shocking admission has intensified debate about the motives behind the killing and raised alarm over the alleged broader plot targeting religious leaders.
Investigators continue examining the full scope of Sheafe’s claims, including whether the alleged plan to kill more than a dozen Christian figures had progressed beyond the initial attack.
For many observers, the case represents one of the most disturbing acts of violence against a Christian pastor in recent memory, combining religious symbolism, premeditation, and an openly confessed motive that authorities are still working to fully understand.
