A Chicago man who previously sparked national outrage for torturing a disabled teenager in a sickening attack broadcast online has been arrested again, this time accused of chasing down and violently assaulting a cyclist.
Tesfaye Cooper, 30, had only been out of prison for two years after serving a seven-year sentence for his role in the notorious 2017 attack, which saw an 18-year-old disabled victim abused on camera in footage that spread rapidly across social media.
Now, police say Cooper is once again facing serious allegations.
According to reports, the latest incident unfolded when a cyclist allegedly waved at Cooper, a gesture that prosecutors say triggered a violent response. Cooper and another individual are accused of chasing the man down, beating him, and spitting on him during the assault.
The attackers allegedly identified themselves as members of the “Gangster Disciples” during the incident before stealing the victim’s bicycle.
The victim’s condition has not been fully detailed, but the brazen nature of the alleged attack has once again raised concerns about repeat offenders and public safety.
Cooper’s name first became widely known following the disturbing 2017 case, in which a vulnerable teenager was subjected to prolonged abuse in what authorities described as a racially motivated attack. The incident, which was streamed live on Facebook, drew widespread condemnation and led to multiple arrests.
After serving his sentence, Cooper was released roughly two years ago.
His latest arrest is likely to intensify debate over whether violent offenders are being released too soon, particularly in cases involving prior high-profile crimes.
As the investigation continues, the case has reignited outrage in Chicago, with many questioning how someone previously convicted in such a disturbing case could allegedly find themselves accused of another violent attack so soon after release.
Authorities have not yet released full details on charges or court proceedings, but the case is expected to move quickly through the system as public attention grows.
