A day of sightseeing at one of Mexico’s most iconic landmarks turned into a scene of terror after a gunman opened fire among crowds of visitors, killing a Canadian woman and injuring more than a dozen others before taking his own life.
The shocking attack unfolded at the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacán, just outside Mexico City, where tourists from around the world had gathered near the famed Pyramid of the Moon.
Mexico’s security cabinet said a man suddenly began firing at the busy archaeological site, sparking panic as visitors fled for safety. In the chaos, a Canadian woman was fatally shot, before the attacker turned the weapon on himself.
Authorities later confirmed that a firearm, a bladed weapon and live ammunition were recovered at the scene.
At least 13 people were injured during the violence, with eight still hospitalized late Monday, officials said. Earlier reports indicated that four victims suffered gunshot wounds, while others were hurt in the stampede as crowds scrambled to escape the gunfire.
The injured included tourists from multiple countries, highlighting the international scale of the tragedy. Among those taken to hospital were six Americans, three Colombians, one Russian, two Brazilians and another Canadian, according to Associated Press.
Canada’s Foreign Ministry later confirmed that one of its citizens had been killed and another wounded in the attack, offering condolences to the victims’ families and thanking Mexican authorities for their response.
Disturbing videos circulating on social media show the moment panic erupted, with crowds running from the area as gunshots rang out near the ancient structures.
The incident comes at a sensitive time for Mexico, as the country faces increasing scrutiny over public safety while preparing to welcome millions of visitors for the upcoming World Cup this summer.
Investigators are now working to piece together the gunman’s motive, as questions mount over how such a deadly attack could unfold at one of the nation’s most visited and heavily trafficked historic sites.
