Every once in a while, someone drops a take so wild it makes the entire internet stop mid-scroll and go, “hold on… what?”
That’s exactly what happened when cardiothoracic surgeon Steven Gundry decided to basically flip decades of common sense on its head and say, yeah… maybe smoking isn’t the villain we think it is.
Not “cut back a little.” Not “there’s nuance.”
Straight up suggesting nicotine could have real benefits if everything else in your life is dialed in.
And then he drops the line that sent this clip into orbit:
“Probably it’s because he smoked that he’s doing so well.”
Now he’s not out here saying “rip cigarettes all day and you’ll live forever.” His whole argument is more like, nicotine might have some biological upsides, especially when it comes to things like mitochondrial function, and that the damage we associate with smoking could be tied more to lifestyle, diet, and everything else people are doing wrong.
He even points to places like Sardinia, talking about populations where tons of men smoke and still live a long time, like it’s some kind of real-life cheat code we’ve all been ignoring.
And honestly, if that was the only part of the clip, people might’ve just shrugged and moved on.
But then Mikhail Varshavski, aka Dr. Mike, jumps in… and you can feel the brakes slam.
He starts pushing back immediately, questioning the logic, the conclusions, all of it. And suddenly it goes from “huh, interesting theory” to “okay, yeah something’s not adding up here.”
Because here’s the thing, and this is why the internet is going crazy over it, there’s a massive difference between saying nicotine has some potential effects in isolation and saying smoking, as in lighting up cigarettes, is somehow good for you.
That’s like saying “water is good for you” and then recommending people drink soda all day.
And people online are split exactly how you’d expect. Half are like, “wait… have we been lied to this whole time?” and the other half are like, “there is absolutely no chance we’re doing pro-smoking propaganda in 2026.”
