A law enforcement incident in California involving a barricaded gunman who fatally shot a detective ended after deputies used an armored vehicle to neutralize the suspect, according to official reports and later review findings.

The incident occurred on April 9, 2026, in Porterville, during an eviction-related call involving the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were serving an eviction notice when 59-year-old David Eric Morales allegedly opened fire with a rifle.

Authorities say the gunfire struck and killed 35-year-old Detective Randy Hoppert at the scene.

Following the shooting, Morales reportedly barricaded himself inside the property and continued firing at responding law enforcement officers, triggering an extended standoff involving multiple agencies.

During the operation, a SWAT armored vehicle known as a “Rook” was used to breach parts of the residence in an effort to gain control of the situation. Officials say that as the structure was being compromised, Morales fled to a backyard area and remained armed while hiding in brush.

According to the report, Morales then fired at an approaching armored BearCat vehicle.

In response, a deputy operating the BearCat struck Morales, an action later described by officials as an intentional use of lethal force to end the threat.

Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux publicly defended the decision, stating: “We intentionally ran him over… You shoot at cops, we’re going to run you over. He got what he deserved.”

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office later conducted an internal review. On May 12, its Incident Review Board concluded that the deputy’s use of deadly force was within policy.

The case has drawn attention due to the uncommon nature of armored vehicle deployment as a direct lethal force measure, as well as the multi-agency response to the hours-long armed standoff.

Officials have not released additional details regarding Morales’ condition at the conclusion of the incident beyond confirming he was killed during the encounter.

The investigation remains part of standard post-incident review procedures for officer-involved shootings.
