LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A concerned Kentucky mother took drastic action to protect her nonverbal autistic son after repeated complaints from school staff raised red flags about his treatment at a public elementary school, only to uncover what she described as shocking verbal and physical aggression by an employee.
Tiphanee Lee said she suspected something was wrong when Field Elementary School officials repeatedly contacted her about her 7-year-old son Semaj's alleged "aggressive" and "disruptive" behavior, conduct that did not match how he acted at home. After the school denied her requests to observe the classroom, Lee hid a small camera in her son's dreadlocks before sending him to school on May 13.
The hidden recording, which Lee later shared publicly, allegedly captured an assistant teacher aggressively confronting the child. Audio from the footage includes the staff member yelling phrases like "Get off me now, boy!" and other commands while Semaj is heard screaming and clapping in distress. Lee said other adults in the room did nothing to intervene.
"This is unacceptable," Lee stated during a press conference. "While this was happening, there was adults in the room who did nothing to stop it." She added emotionally, "I am his voice, and I will speak for him. We trusted his school to protect him... Instead, he was harmed, silenced, and failed by the very people who were supposed to keep him safe."
Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) confirmed it is investigating the allegations in partnership with Child Protective Services and district police. The implicated staff member has been barred from the building pending the outcome of the probe. Field Elementary Principal Deb Rivera sent a letter to families emphasizing that student safety is the top priority and that the district is following all procedures.
Lee and local leaders, including Metro Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins, used the press conference to call for immediate accountability – including the termination and prosecution of those involved. and broader policy changes, such as mandatory classroom cameras for nonverbal and special-needs students.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage online and renewed scrutiny of public school oversight, particularly for vulnerable children who cannot easily report mistreatment. Critics argue that cases like this highlight deeper failures in the system, where parents are often left in the dark and forced to take extraordinary measures to ensure their children's safety. Many are now demanding greater transparency, parental access to footage, and stricter vetting and training for staff working with special needs children.
No charges have been filed at this time, and the full investigation remains ongoing. Lee has vowed to continue advocating for her son and others like him.
