Southampton, UK – In a disturbing case highlighting what critics call the disastrous consequences of two-tier policing and cultural sensitivities gone wrong, bodycam footage has emerged showing UK police officers handcuffing a dying teenager while his alleged murderer was initially treated as the victim.

Eighteen-year-old University of Southampton student Henry Nowak was walking home from a night out in December 2025 when he was stabbed five times, including a brutal wound to the chest. As he bled out and gasped "I can't breathe," officers at the scene focused their attention on his attacker’s claims rather than the clear evidence of a violent assault.

According to the footage shared widely on X by US commentator Collin Rugg, officers detained and handcuffed the injured Nowak after 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa claimed the student had racially abused him and removed his turban. Nowak desperately told officers he had been stabbed, but was treated with suspicion while Digwa received different handling.

Nowak later became unresponsive. He did not survive the attack.

Digwa, who carried out the stabbing with a 21cm ceremonial Sikh kirpan knife, has now been convicted of murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.

Hampshire Police have since issued an apology for their officers’ response at the scene. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is now investigating how the incident was handled, including the initial decision to treat the attacker as the victim.

This case has sparked fresh outrage over what many see as systemic issues in British policing, where fear of "racism" accusations appears to override basic common sense and the need to protect victims. Questions are being raised about whether cultural sensitivities around the attacker’s background and religious beliefs played a role in the confused police response.

The bodycam footage raises serious concerns about training and priorities when dealing with knife crime incidents involving claims of racial motivation.

Henry Nowak was a young man with his whole life ahead of him, a university student simply trying to get home. Instead, he was stabbed to death in the street, and British police seemingly got it wrong from the first moment.

As knife crime continues to plague British cities, cases like this fuel growing public anger at a justice system that too often seems more concerned with optics than with protecting law-abiding citizens.
