Yemen'S 'Spider-Man' Plummets To Horrible Death In Volcanic Crater After Daring Barefoot Climb

Al-Qa'qa' bin Antar, the viral Yemeni daredevil nicknamed "Spider-Man of Yemen" for his death-defying free solo climbs, died Thursday after slipping and plunging into a steaming volcanic crater while filming another heart-stopping stunt.

The 30-something adrenaline junkie, known across Arabic social media for scampering up impossible rock faces barefoot and without any safety gear — lost his grip on the treacherous inner walls of the Haradhat Damt crater in Yemen's Al Dhale province. Eyewitness video captured the horrifying moment he tumbled into the sulfurous abyss below.

In the clip, bin Antar, wearing a striped long-sleeve shirt and checkered pants, clings to the near-vertical rock face high above the crater floor. He reaches for a hold, his body swinging out, then he's gone, cartwheeling into the depths in a sickening fall.

Rescue teams faced a nightmare recovery, battling toxic fumes and scalding 50-65°C (122-149°F) waters to pull his body from the extinct volcano's hazardous interior. It took hours of grueling effort by civil defense divers before his remains were finally retrieved.

Bin Antar had built a massive following with his insane stunts inside the popular tourist crater near Damt city. He'd previously made headlines for rescuing a sheep trapped in the same deadly pit — scrambling down and back up like a real-life web-slinger. But this time, gravity won.

Locals and fans had long warned about the risks. The 120-meter-deep crater features steep, unmarked walls with no safety ladders or easy exits. Bin Antar performed his acrobatics, including handstands on dizzying ledges, purely for views, in a country torn by conflict and poverty where such spectacles offered a shot at fame and income.

Tributes poured in online as the video spread like wildfire. Many called him a hero who died doing what he loved. Others were blunt: "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes."

"Darwin is undefeated," one observer noted, contrasting bin Antar's no-gear approach with professional climbers who meticulously prepare.

The tragedy has sparked fresh debate over extreme social media stunts in dangerous spots, and whether cheering crowds enable reckless behavior for likes.

Yemen's "Spider-Man" swung one last time. This time, there was no web to catch him.
