WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a fixture in American politics for more than two decades and one of the Senate’s most outspoken voices on foreign policy and national defense, has died at the age of 71.

Graham’s office confirmed the senator passed away Saturday evening following a brief and sudden illness. Emergency personnel responded to a cardiac arrest call at his residence on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Details surrounding the exact nature of the illness were not immediately released, but his passing stunned colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

A former Air Force lawyer and one-time presidential candidate, Graham served in the U.S. House from 1995 to 2003 before winning election to the Senate. He quickly established himself as a leading Republican voice on military and intelligence matters, earning a reputation as a staunch advocate for a strong national defense and robust American leadership abroad.

Throughout his career, Graham was known for his willingness to break with party orthodoxy at times, particularly during the Trump era, where he evolved from a vocal critic to a key ally. He played pivotal roles on the Senate Judiciary Committee, including chairing it from 2019 to 2021, and was instrumental in confirming numerous conservative judges, including three Supreme Court justices.

Graham was also a fierce supporter of aid to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, frequently traveling to Kyiv and pushing legislation to arm Ukrainian forces. Just days before his death, he had returned from another visit to the war-torn nation, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials to discuss ongoing support efforts.

“Lindsey Graham was a patriot who loved his country and never wavered in his commitment to keeping America safe,” a senior GOP said. “His voice in the Senate will be sorely missed at a time when the world faces growing threats from adversaries like China, Russia, and Iran.”

Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. President Donald Trump, whom Graham eventually supported after initial differences, called him a “true fighter for America First values in the end.”

Senate Republican Leader John Thune described Graham as “a tireless champion for our military and our allies.”

Graham, a bachelor who often quipped about his single status, was born in Central, South Carolina, and graduated from the University of South Carolina and its law school. He remained deeply connected to his home state and was preparing for what would have been another re-election bid.

Flags at the U.S. Capitol were lowered to half-staff in his honor. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to appoint a replacement to serve until a special election can be held.

Graham’s death leaves a significant void in the Senate Republican conference and removes one of the chamber’s most experienced voices on foreign affairs at a critical moment in global history. Funeral arrangements are pending.
