A Texas mother is speaking out following the tragic deaths of her three young sons after they fell into an icy pond in a devastating accident.
According to FOX 4, the incident occurred when the youngest child, 6-year-old Howard Hangaman, fell through the ice and into the freezing water. His older brothers, ages 8 and 9, jumped in immediately in an attempt to save him.
Their mother, Cheyenne Hangaman, told reporters that she also jumped into the pond in a desperate effort to rescue her children.
“I started running toward the pond and I jumped in. I tried to save them while also trying to keep myself alive,” she said.
She described how her youngest went underwater first, followed by his older brothers. “It was one of me and three of them, and they all needed me at one time. I just couldn’t… I couldn’t save them,” Hangaman said.
A nearby high school football coach also attempted to rescue the children, but the icy conditions made it impossible to reach them in time. Hangaman was eventually pulled from the water by a neighbor. She survived the ordeal, but her sons did not.
Authorities have not released additional details on the investigation, but the mother emphasized the suddenness and danger of icy water accidents. She expressed her hope that sharing her story will raise awareness about the risks of frozen ponds and similar hazards.
The community has responded with condolences and support for Hangaman and her family, highlighting the bravery of the boys who tried to save each other in a split-second moment of crisis.
